Monkey King: A Story From China
Date: 5/27/2010 - 8/21/2010
Location: Pensacola Museum of Art

Museum of Art will open the new traveling exhibition Monkey King: A Story from China on May 27th 2010. On display until August 21, 2010, the interactive exhibit brings to life the history and culture of China as children and families discover the astonishing superpowers and humorous mischief of Monkey, hero of the classic Chinese story The Journey to the West (Xiyouji). The 1,500-sq-ft exhibition tells the magical tale of Monkey, a story that has been avidly shared by parents and children for centuries in China and is rooted in an actual historical events the famous 7th century pilgrimage of a monk who traveled across China to India and brought Buddhism back to China. Highlights of the exhibit include flying on clouds to glimpse China’s geography, making mischief with a musical peach tree, testing wits against Bull Demon in a game of transformations, and a very unusual banquet table. Monkey King: A Story from China was created by the Children’s Museum of Manhattan in conjunction with international and interdisciplinary Chinese scholars, museum educators, exhibition designers and institutional partners. It is one of seven exhibits in the national Asian Exhibit Initiative, funded by the Freeman Foundation and administered by the Association of Children’s Museums (ACM). Of the seven, it is the only exhibit to focus on China. Between 2004-2007 it traveled to 11 large children’s museums around the nation. Designed to blend traditional Chinese culture with an understanding of modern China, the exhibition will help adults and children to understand and appreciate the complexities of one of the leading countries of the 21st century. The exhibition features interviews from contemporary Chinese adults and children who talk about the meaning of Monkey King in their lives, a Beijing Opera actor demonstrating how he portrays Monkey on stage, and a collection of pop culture objects that show how Monkey King permeates modern Chinese culture.“Monkey King: A Story from China makes China’s history, traditional culture and modern society fun and accessible to people of all ages,” said Andrew Ackerman, Executive Director of The Children’s Museum of Manhattan. “As they re-enact the story as a personal journey, they will find that the challenges facing Monkey King on his quest are applicable to their own lives, and learn the Chinese values of resourcefulness, loyalty to the group, and devotion.”Children will journey through this timeless adventure story as if on their own quest. Each section of the exhibition presents a child with multi-sensory, multi-dimensional, interactive components that teach motor and cognitive skills, and impart relevant and meaningful lessons.
