DIB, UWF Historic Trust Unveil History-Themed Photographic Panels Featuring Women of Palafox Street
The Pensacola Downtown Improvement Board, in collaboration with the UWF Historic Trust, has unveiled three historically-themed photographic mural panels at the corner of Garden and Jefferson Streets. These murals showcase women and scenes from Palafox Street’s past, offering residents and visitors a glimpse into downtown Pensacola’s rich history. Additionally, they serve a practical purpose by concealing a large trash compactor located at this bustling intersection.
“Downtown Pensacola is home to many events, festivals, art exhibits, and more, and public art projects like this one can change a large, unsightly corner and unwelcoming space into into an area that supports a more positive space to live, work, and play,” said Walker Wilson, DIB executive director.
The unveiling of these photographic panels marks another step forward in the Downtown Improvement Board’s ongoing efforts to enrich the cultural fabric and visual appeal of downtown Pensacola. By blending historical storytelling with functional urban design, this initiative not only enhances the aesthetic of a key intersection but also fosters a deeper connection to the city’s vibrant past.
“The intersection of Garden and Jefferson Streets has now become another gateway to Pensacola’s rich history, thanks to this innovative project,” said Wilson. “We are thrilled to contribute to a public art piece that celebrates local heritage while improving the urban environment.”
