Along the gulf coast, 2020 has been a chaotic year, to say the least. Hurricanes and flooding, COVID-19—who knew that this year would bring so many challenges? Downtown Pensacola certainly saw its share of impacts, but as we entered January, street closures due to construction were one of the biggest concerns. Looking back now, those first few weeks of 2020 don’t seem quite so bad.

On every continent you visit (with the exception of Antarctica) you’ll find pelicans soaring the coastal skies above you, looking for a meal in the glinting ripples of cool blue passing beneath them. There’s one species of pelican unique to Pensacola, however. If you’re a local, you’ve probably had the chance to catch sight of a few of these elusive birds; and if you’re a visitor, then you’re in for a real treat when you meet one. The intrigue surrounding these pelicans is that each bird is completely one-of-a-kind, capturing a range of color only an artist’s eye could produce.
